Annie SeEun Hyung, cello
Korean-American cellist Annie SeEun Hyung deeply treasures the dynamic human connections cultivated by music. Despite a late introduction to the cello following a childhood primarily occupied with academic and athletic activity, her most vivid life memories have always been closely intertwined with music through listening and performing. Throughout a youth spent constantly moving across continents and countries, Annie is grateful to have found a community through music-making.
A particular fascination with the intimacies of small ensemble playing has led Annie to festivals including Yellowbarn, IMS Prussia Cove, Kronberg Academy’s Chamber Music Connects the World, the Perlman Music Program, and the Taos School of Music. She has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to play chamber music alongside world-class musicians including Steven Isserlis, Christian Tetzlaff, Donald Weilerstein, and Tabea Zimmerman. Vivian Weilerstein, Robert McDonald, Merry Peckham, and Joel Krosnick are musical mentors to whom Annie is indebted to. Recent and upcoming concerts include guest appearances with A Far Cry, Boston Chamber Music Society, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, Rockport Music, and Olympic Music Festival. As the winner of the Tecchler-Forster Cello Competition, she performs on a cello made by David Tecchler in 1711.
A graduate of Northwestern University, Annie previously studied with Hans Jorgen Jensen, Michel Strauss, and Sarah Koo Freeman, and is currently pursuing graduate studies at New England Conservatory under the guidance of Larry Lesser. She is the recipient of the Abraham Skernick Presidential Scholarship, and also serves as cellist of Trio Eris.
In her free time, Annie loves discovering new restaurants, petting dogs on sidewalks, and curling up in cozy reading nooks. She can frequently be found (somewhat infamously) meandering aimlessly along the Charles River, with AirPods blasting her most recent musical infatuation.
